HOW IT WORKS
As hockey coaches ourselves, we know there isn’t much downtime. We built this system to make it as simple as possible to enter data and see results fast. Data collection can be done during or after the game, using either pen/paper or a laptop. Our system works with both!

With almost 40 years of combined coaching experience, we understand the power of stats and developed a passion for statistical analysis, video breakdown, and detailed reporting. We searched for an inexpensive tool to that would handle these needs and unlock the power of statistics but none existed, so we decided to build one designed specifically for us…and now for you, the Coaches.

MEET OUR FOUNDERS
Jay Varady was named the Kingston Frontenacs head coach in the summer of 2017. Prior to that, he spent four season behind the bench in Sioux City of the USHL, during that time the franchise won a Western Conference regular season banner in 2014-2015, an Anderson cup in 2016-2017 and a trip to the Clark Cup Finals in 2016-2017.
He was named the USHL coach of the year in 2016-2017. A native of Cahokia, Illinois Jay graduated from Union College, where he played three seasons of Division I hockey from 1997 through 2000. He was captain of the team during the 1999-2000 season, and a two-time member of the East Coast Athletic Conferences All-Academic Team. At the Junior-A level he played for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League, where he was also team captain.
His coaching career began at Union College during the 2000-2001 season when he served as a volunteer assistant coach. After graduation, Jay served as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Forge where he helped them become the League and Playoff Champions, and eventually won the National Championship in 2002-2003.
Jay spent 8 seasons with the Everett Silvertips in the WHL beginning in 2003-2004, where he served as an Assistant Coach, an Associate Coach and as the teams Interim Head Coach. In his time with Read More…
Michael has been coaching hockey and developing custom software since 1997. A USA Hockey Masters Level Coach including stints at NCAA Division I (NCHC), Tier 1 Junior A (USHL/BCHL), Canadian Major Junior (WHL), Collegiate Varsity Club Hockey (ACHA), and Tier 1 AAA youth teams, Michael is also a member of USA Hockey’s National Festival coaching staff and a former USA Hockey Coaching Coordinator. With the creation of Bench Metrics, he has been able to combine both his coaching and software passions to make hockey analytics approachable and easy to implement at any level.
Having worked and coached under some of the best coaches in the business, including former NHL Head Coach Kevin Constantine, former NHL Assistant Coach George Gwozdecky, and the winningest coach in the history of USA Junior Hockey, Bliss Littler, Michael has been able to combine some of the best coaching methodologies and tactics into the Bench Metrics product.
He has coached Junior hockey in the WHL (Everett), USHL (Omaha, Youngstown), BCHL (Wenatchee), and also spent two years at the NCAA Division 1 level (University of Denver). In the past ten seasons Michael has coached 37 NHL draft picks, six of whom were selected in the 1st round of the NHL Entry Draft. A native from Queens, New York, Michael now resides in Seattle, WA.
